‘It is the second time I have won the UNESCO Outstanding Handcraft Badge since 2012 when I won the first one. This is also the third world’s fame Baoqing bamboo carving works have won since the 1915 Banama International Expo.’ said Wang Yuhao excitedly on August 9, holding his winning work the Square Bamboo Chinese Brush Container.

On August 4, word came that the appraisal of the 2014 UNESCO Outstanding Handcrafts ended and the World’s Outstanding Handcraft Badge was granted to two works, one being the Square Bamboo Chinese Brush Container created by Hunan’s handcraft master Wang Yuhao, the other being the carved & branded Bamboo Containing Case by Prof. Tang Wenling from the Designing Department of Shaoyang Institute. The two works stood out among 106 articles/sets of artistic works. It is said that the winning creations will be on display at the World Culture & Handcraft Festival to be held in Dongyang, Zhejiang. In 2012, the United Nations started “the World’s Outstanding Handcraft Badge Appraisal” in Southeast Asia. Afterwards, the appraising activity spread to South Asia, Middle Asia and East Asia, thus becoming a global cultural project. The activity is held every two years with the purpose of encouraging craftsmen to apply traditional materials and skills in their creation so as to inherit traditional techniques and protect cultural diversity.

The Square Bamboo Chinese Brush Container is graceful and elegant, on one side of which is carved a classic sentence “Learning without thinking leads to puzzle while thinking without learning to idleness”, and on the opposite side of which are carved designs of sword-leaf cymbidium. Wang Yuhao, an excellent student of bamboo carving master Zen Jiantan and also the youngest handcraft master of Hunan Province, has won over ten national prizes. This award adds to his fame.

It is amazing that the branded bamboo craft won an award. Bamboo carving-branding is a branch of Baoqing bamboo carving. In the 1960s, Shaoyang Bamboo Craft Workshop created craft works by branding. However, craftsmen of this kind became fewer and fewer because few people would like to learn the craftsmanship due to its high requirements for a learner’s drawing skills.

Aware of this situation, Tang Wenling took up the task to preserve Baoqing bamboo branding. He combined branding with carving, traditional Chinese drawing with folk drawing and the scholar’s style with the countryside style. The subjects of his works cover old streets, folkways and customs. Besides the sentence and flowers, on the other two sides of the winning Bamboo Containing Case are branded old streets with old buildings of Shaoyang City that are disappearing. Tang desires to awaken people’s awareness of protecting traditional culture.
